5 questions the care home industry should care about

The care sector has always been one of the most important sectors for us all in one way or another. Looking after our loved ones on our behalf, we trust caregivers to keep our family safe and comfortable.

As businesses, care homes need care too.

We have put together a list of 5 important questions that care homes should care about.

If you manage a care home, the answers to these questions will make a real difference to your business.

Have you claimed your CCL rebate yet?

Climate Change Levy is an environmental tax on the electricity & gas you use within your business.

A charge gets added to each kWh of energy used, itemised on your bill produced from your energy supplier(s), collected as part of your payment & passed onto the UK Government.

Its purpose is to encourage improved energy efficiency and aid in reducing carbon emissions.

However, did you know most care homes are exempt from this charge?

The Electric Board can organise a refund for care homes that have been wrongly paying CCL to their supplier, backdated for up to 4 years.

Are you paying the correct VAT?

There's a misconception that all businesses pay 20% VAT.

Care homes get classed as residential living quarters. Which means they are only obliged to pay 5% (excluding the energy used for non-care orientated usage).

The Electric Board can facilitate a refund from your supplier if you have been overpaying on your VAT.

Are you still paying VAT on your water?

Did you know, back in March 2017, the water market became deregulated?

As a result, businesses can now switch suppliers to save money on their water bills.

We understand that care homes often use large amounts of water, so much so that we recovered over £7000 in one year for one of our care home clients.

"The Electric Board have worked with various Care Homes across the UK & ROI,

recovering thousands in overpaid CCL & VAT charges along with supporting care homes (both for-profit and charitable providers) with ever-rising energy contracts

The process is simple. The Electric Board handles things from start to finish.

This is a cost-free exercise all care providers should explore and benefit from."

Are you on the right tariff for your energy needs?

As care homes operate 24 hours, they tend to use large amounts of energy.

We have found that reviewing your tariff or type of contact can be a successful way of reducing future costs.

KVA analysis has proven to be a very beneficial exercise to the majority of our care sector customers.

Dealing with large energy providers is notoriously time-intensive and can be a frustrating experience for busy care homes. The Electric board can help.

Is your care home REGO certified?

The Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin (REGO) scheme provides transparency to consumers about the proportion of electricity that suppliers source from renewable generation.

Displaying a REGO certificate in your care home and on your website lets clients know you are dedicated to reducing your carbon footprint and take your environmental obligations to heart.

To conclude, you may already have answered some of these important questions. If you could have answered them all, we really commend your commitment to your care home business.
